Humanities

This is a lively Department which delivers History, Geography and Religious Education to all pupils at Key Stage 3, as well as offering these subjects to those who opt for them at G.C.S.E. Vocational courses in Duke of Edinburgh are also offered in Key Stage Four.

Information technology is used increasingly during many of our lessons when we use our own laptops as well as the school's computer rooms.

We always aim to develop the understanding, skills and enthusiasm of our pupils which will make their studies both enjoyable and rewarding by using a variety of techniques and approaches. We are very proud of our achievements which are reflected in both our Key Stage 3 results and our G.C.S.E. examination results every year.
The department is very well resourced. Besides our wide range of texts, maps etc. we have our own video equipment, computers and religious artefacts, to which all pupils have access in order to develop their studies.

Trips are an important part of our courses and day trips to places such as York Minster, Chester and the Manchester Jewish Museum are regularly organised. Each year the Year Ten Geographers take part in a residential field trip to the Lake District to develop coursework for their G.C.S.E. Year 11 Historians participate in a Hitler on trial workshop.
As a department we feel that each of the Humanities subjects is important as we teach about the past, present and future. It is learning about people, cultures and places. It is about learning from past mistakes and not repeating them.

Children need to learn and understand about other people and places in order that they can have some understanding of the way the world works.

Knowledge and understanding breeds tolerance for those who might behave in a way we consider different to ourselves.
