Modern Foreign Languages

The department has a suite of rooms on D Corridor where we teach French and Spanish. In the department, there are three full time specialist linguists who all teach both languages across key stages 3 and 4.

In year 7 all pupils study French using motivational, up-to-date resources from the Metro coursebooks. French is studied up to the end of year nine, and in year 8 pupils begin the study of Spanish as their second foreign language, using the Listos range of resources. Both French and Spanish are then studied up to the end of year 9. | |||||||||||||
| At the end of Key stage 3 pupils choose which language they wish to study for GCSE, and some pupils do both French and Spanish. We continue to use the Metro and Listos materials and we study the course leading to the AQA full GCSE, where the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are tested. Writing is assessed by coursework. We are at an exciting time in the development of the Modern Languages Department, as we are currently looking into the possibility of some pupils taking their GCSE early in year 9 to allow them to do another language in year 10. We are also looking into alternative qualification for those pupils who enjoy languages but don’t want to do a GCSE course. |

Extra-curricular activitiesThe department runs classes in the school’s “ Revise ‘n’ Relax” programme in the school holidays which are designed to help improve GCSE performance. We have MFL homework clubs, have hosted a visiting theatre group and run trips to Café Rouge and La Tasca restaurants in Manchester so that pupils can experience French and Spanish food without having to travel too far!! |

ICT in MFLThe department has its own trolley of lap tops, and pupils have regular access to ICT in modern languages. We use a lot of web-sites and ICT software to support the study of languages, and pupils enjoy the use of the interactive white boards which are in every classroom. |
