Design and Technology prepares pupils to participate in tomorrows rapidly changing technologies. They learn to think and intervene creatively to improve the quality of their environments. The subject calls for pupils to become autonomous and creative problem solvers, as individuals and members of a team. They must look for needs, wants and opportunities and respond to them by developing a range of ideas and making products and systems. They combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social and environmental issues, function and industrial practices. As they do so, they reflect on and evaluate present and past technologies, its uses and effects. Through Design and Technology, all pupils can become discriminating and informed users of products and become innovators.

Design and Technology is offered in 5 subject areas at Key Stage 3 including Resistant Materials, Graphic Products, Systems and Control, Textiles Technology and Food Technology. All areas, with the exception of Systems and Control, can be studied further in Key Stage 4 to GCSE level following the AQA syllabus.

The Design and Technology department has excellent facilities where traditional and high tech methods of production combine to produce quality products. These include a fully equipped ICT suite that incorporates the latest CAD and CAM technologies, a traditional wood working workshop, a food technology kitchen, graphics room and textiles room.
